Ropework Wisdom

Understanding how to work with rope is an ongoing journey. In our blog, we publish articles exploring the engineering behind knots, tips on caring for your gear, and guides to selecting the right rope for your next trip on the water or rock.

Choosing Between Nylon and Polyester Rope

When selecting rope, the fiber material determines how it handles tension, moisture, and sunlight.

  • Nylon: Stretches significantly (up to 40% before breaking), making it excellent for absorbing shocks, such as climbing falls or anchor lines. However, it loses strength when wet.
  • Polyester: Has very little stretch, maintains its strength when wet, and offers excellent UV resistance. Perfect for sailing sheets and halyards where stretch would ruin sail shape.

Knowing these characteristics helps you choose the correct material for the task, ensuring safety and durability.

How to Inspect and Wash Your Ropes

Dirt is the silent enemy of rope. Fine grit particles work their way between the fibers, cutting them from the inside when the rope is bent under load.

To maintain the safety and lifespan of your ropes:

  1. Inspect: Run your bare hands along the entire length of the rope, feeling for stiff spots, soft cores, or fuzzy sheaths.
  2. Wash: Wash ropes by hand in a tub of lukewarm water with a mild, non-detergent soap. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  3. Dry: Hang to dry in a cool, shaded area. Never use a dryer or expose them to direct sunlight while drying.
