Meet Sam
I started Rowan Knots because I saw too many people struggling with basic ropework when they needed it most. I have spent years working with ropes in demanding environments—both on the water and on rock faces. Over that time, I realized that memorizing steps from a diagram rarely works when you are cold, tired, or hurried.
My background is in commercial yacht rigging and outdoor instruction, with an RYA Day Skipper ticket and a Single Pitch Award earned over twelve seasons on the water and on rock. I focus on breaking down complex movements into simple, physical sensations. We look at where the tension goes, how the rope locks against itself, and how to verify that your knot is dressed correctly before you put weight on it.
Our Philosophy
A knot is a structural system. If you only memorize the "rabbit goes out of the hole" stories, you do not actually understand the structure. If you make a mistake, you won't know how to spot it.
I teach people to look at a knot and see the physics:
- Security: Will it hold under load?
- Stability: Will it untie itself when the load is removed?
- Simplicity: Can you tie it quickly and inspect it at a glance?
We practice slowly, then with our eyes closed, then under simulated pressure. That is how you build real confidence.
Location & Service Area
I am based in Bristol. For in-person workshops, I travel throughout the South West of England, visiting sailing clubs, climbing walls, community centers, and private groups.
For anyone outside the South West, I offer live video classes. Using a multi-camera setup, I can show you the knot from my perspective and zoom in on details, while giving you real-time feedback as you tie along.
